What happens when Carlsbad Village hosts its two busiest kinds of day back to back? The Carlsbad Village Street Faire is always held on the first Sunday of May and November. This year Halloween lands on the Saturday just before it, and the Carlsbad Village Association is holding Halloween in the Village on Halloween itself.
The two days work in opposite ways. Saturday sends families from one storefront to the next. On Sunday the streets close and the Village becomes one outdoor marketplace for more than 100,000 visitors. Both days run through a Village with several new addresses since the May faire, and past a coastline that is halfway through a rebuild.
Saturday Spreads Out Across the Village
Halloween in the Village runs Saturday, October 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It has no single venue. The CVA sets it up as a route, and it works best in this order:
- Pick up a bucket at 2691 State Street. The first 250 children get a pumpkin candy bucket here.
- Follow the Candy Corn icon. Participating businesses act as official Candy Stops, and each one shows a Candy Corn icon in its window. Phoenix Sports and Le Papagayo Carlsbad sponsor the trick-or-treating.
- Sign up for the costume contest at Village Faire Shopping Center, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive. Sign-ups open at 11:30 a.m. and judging runs from noon to 1 p.m. Four winners will be named, in age divisions that include 1 to 4 and 5 to 8.
- Finish at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, 3115 Roosevelt Street. They're running indoor and outdoor carnival games, a bounce house, candy corn and popcorn all day, with no entry fee.
Plan around the contest, since it's the one fixed time slot. Arrive at 11, collect a bucket and work the Candy Stops toward Village Faire, and you'll get there in time for sign-ups. The carnival on Roosevelt has no set time, so it works for the afternoon.
Sunday Closes the Streets
The next morning everything happens in one place. The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the Carlsbad Village Street Faire on Sunday, November 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The CVA calls it the largest one-day street faire in the nation. Expect hundreds of vendor booths with crafts, antiques, clothing and jewelry, plus an international food court, live music, a beer garden and rides for children.
Road closures start well before the first booth opens. For the May 3 faire, the City of Carlsbad's closure listing closed these streets from about 4 a.m. to 8 p.m.:
- Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street
- Washington Street from Carlsbad Village Drive to Christiansen Way
- State and Roosevelt streets from Carlsbad Village Drive to Beech Street
- Madison Street from Carlsbad Village Drive to half a block north of Grand
- The connecting alleys and the Oak Avenue Public Parking Lot
That list describes the spring layout. Check the November closures at carlsbadvillagefaire.com before you move a car Saturday night.
The shuttles matter more than usual this time. Free shuttles run about every 15 minutes from The Shoppes at Carlsbad, near the former Sears, and from the Poinsettia COASTER Station on Avenida Encinas. You can still ride a bike to the faire and use the racks, but there's no bike valet this year.
Parking puts the crowd in perspective. The city added 44 Village and Barrio street spaces last year and 11 more recently on State Street, on Oak Avenue between Tyler Street and the railroad tracks, and near the beach. That's 55 new spaces over two years, against a single day expected to draw more than 100,000 people. The added spaces help the Village on an ordinary weekday. On faire Sunday, the shuttle is the realistic way in.
Three Village Businesses Facing Their First Faire
The spring faire was May 3. Since then, three new businesses have opened within a few blocks of its footprint, so this Sunday will be the first faire for each of them.
| Business | Address | Opened |
|---|---|---|
| Carlsbad Village Books and Marla's Coffee | 640 Grand Avenue | July 2, 2026 |
| Barons Market | 2800 Roosevelt Street | Grand opening June 27–28, 2026 |
| Little KiKi Katsu & More | 2958 Madison Street, Suite 101 | Soft opening June 15, 2026 |
Carlsbad Village Books moved into a space that was an Irish pub for 40 years, first Dooley McCluskey's and then O'Sullivan's. It took about half a year of cleaning, painting and stocking before it opened. The store carries new and used books, gifts, board games and crafts, Marla's Coffee shares the space, and it's open seven days a week. If the Halloween crowd or the booths on Grand get to be too much, it's an easy place to sit down.
Barons Market on Roosevelt held neighborhood previews June 25 and 26 before its grand opening weekend. It's a short walk up the same street from the Boys & Girls Clubs carnival, so you can pick up groceries on the way home Saturday.
On Madison, San Diego Magazine reported that Little KiKi Katsu & More soft-opened June 15, and described the restaurant as built around a single dish.
All three are in or near the streets the faire closed in May. A Sunday with 100,000 visitors will be a new test for each of them. For anyone who lives here, Saturday is the easier day to visit.
The Coast Is Open Again in Places
On both days, the beach is the easiest way out of the crowd, and the route down has changed. The City's October 22 update reported that two of the four stairways from Carlsbad Boulevard to the beach had reopened earlier that week, at Cherry and Hemlock avenues. Crews have now started replacing the stairways at Maple and Sycamore avenues. The project started in November 2025, paused for the summer, and resumed in September 2026.
From the project page, here's how to plan a walk to the water:
- Open: the Hemlock and Cherry stairways, and the ramps at Pine and Tamarack.
- Closed: the Maple and Sycamore stairways.
- Work hours: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding federal holidays. Nothing is scheduled over the faire weekend.
- Weekday driving: Carlsbad Boulevard is down to one lane each way through the work zone, with a 20 mph limit.
- Bikes: the bike lane detours onto Garfield Street from Oak Avenue to Chestnut Avenue.
The current phase is scheduled through spring 2027 and also widens the sidewalk between Cherry and Pine avenues. Next spring adds more change near the beach. The city plans to start work then on 16 more parking spaces by switching parallel parking to diagonal or perpendicular on Grand Avenue, between the Tyler Street alley and Jefferson Street, and on Chestnut Avenue near Pine Park.
The Rest of the Season Is Smaller
After this weekend, the Village events through the holidays are smaller and spaced out:
- November 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Carlsbad Holiday Market at the Woman's Club, 3320 Monroe Street, with local makers and vendors.
- November 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Small Business Saturday in the Village, with gift card drawings, a pint glass treasure hunt and a scavenger hunt. The CVA booth will be at State Street and Grand Avenue.
- December 6, 2 to 4:30 p.m. The 41st Annual Rotary Holiday Tree Lighting at Village Faire, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive. The listed schedule is still marked tentative.
Small Business Saturday sends people from shop to shop much as Halloween does. It's a good day to go back to the bookstore on Grand, Barons on Roosevelt and Little KiKi on Madison, once they've had their first faire weekend.
At The Daniels Group, we keep track of the weekends, openings and street projects that shape everyday life along the coast, from Carlsbad Village to La Jolla. If you have questions about how the Village is changing around you, or you're wondering what these changes mean for your own plans, contact us. We're glad to talk it through.
