The Many Hiking Trails of La Jolla

La Jolla is one of the most popular spots for walking and hiking and for a good reason! The perfect year-round climate, coastal views, and diverse landscape lend to the allure and beauty. On any given day, you will see people with all different skill levels and all walks of life exploring the various trails throughout La Jolla. Whether you are hiking coastal bluffs overlooking the sparkling Pacific, winding through pine tree forests or meandering along dry slopes lined with wildflowers, La Jolla truly has something for everyone! Below is a list of some of the many trails that La Jolla offers:

Black’s Canyon and Scripps Coastal Reserve Biodiversity Trail, La Jolla

Black’s Canyon Trail leads to one of the country’s best and least accessible beaches. Making your way down from the gorgeous homes of La Jolla Farms, Black’s Canyon offers incredible ocean views and steep green slopes. Scripps Coastal Reserve Trail is located on the gorgeous 350-foot oceanfront cliffs at the north end of La Jolla. This trail is a 0.7-mile loop and is good for all skill levels. The reserve is 152 acres of undeveloped land and an 80-acre underwater preserve. There is no beach access on this trail but the views are not to be missed.

Fay Avenue Bike Path, La Jolla

From the heights of the Fay Avenue Bike Path, you can gaze out across the Pacific Ocean and get swept away by the gentle beauty of La Jolla. This is an easy trail that offers a spectacular setting and is known as one of the many “rail-trails” in the San Diego area. It is also dog-friendly and a great place to take Fido out for a stroll!

The La Jolla Canyon Trails

This spot is a favorite among locals because it has so many connecting trails that are well-maintained and offers a variety of terrains. Be sure to check out the La Jolla Canyon Falls and the Backbone or Mugu Peak Trails.

Rose Canyon Bike Path, La Jolla

This is another “rail-trail” and is one of the 1600 that are supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. They work to create a network of former rail lines and connecting corridors. Rose Canyon is also dog-friendly.

Soledad Mountain, La Jolla

This trail is a unique way to explore La Jolla. It is 6 miles roundtrip and offers obscure and winding back roads. The view from Soledad Park is one you won’t soon forget! There are steep grades and tons of wildflowers to enjoy.

La Jolla Heights

This is an area that was set aside to preserve the coastal mixed chaparral habitat that is extremely sensitive. On this trail, you can see succulent gardens, agave leaves, wildlife and more. Expect to be blown away by the 180-degree view of La Jolla Shores, Torrey Pines State Reserve and vast blue ocean.

La Jolla Walking Trail and Coast Walk

Just south of La Jolla Shores Beach is the La Jolla Walking Trail. During low tide, you can take this easy trail from La Jolla Shores to La Jolla Cove and vice-versa. The ocean and beautiful luxury homes will greet you on your right, while the springtime flowers and lush landscape sprinkle the left. The La Jolla Coast Walk gives you an incredible view of La Jolla Bay and the La Jolla Shores coastline. You will love walking directly above the La Jolla Caves and be sure to keep an eye out for harbor seals!

Torrey Pines State Reserve, La Jolla

Most all of the trails at Torrey Pines are easy and can be hiked in a few hours. Many of the hikes are under 2 miles, including Razor Point, Yucca Point, Guy Flemming Trail and Parry Grove. Broken Trail and Beach Trail will both lead you to the beach and are lined with succulents, wildflowers and stunning sandstone. Keep a close watch on the horizon for gray whales and bottle-nosed dolphins.
