Government Sells La Jolla Cross to Mount Soledad Memorial Association

The Department of Defense has sold the property of the Veteran’s Memorial to the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association. The passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015, which specifies the budget and expenditures of the Department of Defense, called for the property to be sold to the Memorial Association. On July 17th, the Mount Soledad Memorial Association purchased the parcel of land from the government for $1.4 million.

About the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association

The Memorial Association has long maintained the property and memorial as a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization, without ownership of the land where the memorial is situated. With the transfer of ownership, the Memorial Association plans to continue their mission as an ongoing memorial to the veterans that have served our country. They seek to “create a monument honoring veterans who have served our country, as both a unique registry of our military heritage and to educate the public on the contributions of military personnel throughout our nation’s history”. There are ongoing improvements planned for memorial, including the addition of over 2,000 more memorial plaques to honor the military service of members from across the country.

About the Veteran’s Memorial

Positioned on top of Mount Soledad, the Veteran’s Memorial is known for it’s inspirational views and sentiment to our military history. With views spanning from Camp Pendleton to Mexico on a clear day, it offers one of the best 360 degree views of San Diego County. The memorial site receives more than ten thousand visitors each year, and is considered one of the “must see” attractions for visitors to San Diego. In addition to the daily tours, special Memorial Day events are held each year to honor those who have served, including a ceremonial flyover and keynote speakers representing branches of the military.

The Mount Soledad Veteran’s Memorial is located at 6437 Caminito Blythefield, La Jolla, CA 92037, and is open from 7:00 am to 10:00pm daily. More information can be found on the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association Website (www.soledadmemorial.com)
